VRU Women Summer 7's 2003 VRU Women make it to the Quarter Finals The Virginia Rugby Union (VRU) Women's Select Seven's Team made it to the Quarter Finals in their first year of competing in the Cape Fear Sevens Tournament in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina this past month. The team was composed of players from all over the VRU. The first day of the tournament went well with two wins and one loss: VRU 12 vs. NC State 7, VRU 0 vs. Atlanta 39, and VRU 38 vs. Eno River 0. This record slated the team against the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) Select Team in second round play and the Quarter Finals. The Quarter Finals win went to MARFU with a score of: VRU 0 - MARFU 15. The VRU players found themselves playing some of their fellow teammates, as some of the MARFU Select team was taken from the VRU. MARFU went on to be the Tournament Champions. Players of the games were: Stephiejo Edwards, Calley Gerber, Jamie Jones, and Helen Paul. The player of the tournament was Jennie Buchner. "What I enjoyed so much about our first tournment together was watching everyone grow as individual players and molding as a team. The women's clubs in Virginia work together like no other union I know of. Once experience backs up our determination we'll be unstoppable." - Stephiejo Edwards The women at Cape Fear 7s represented the VRU very well. In addition to the VRU select-side team, there were 4 women on the MARFU squad, and 1 player with Atlantis, who went to the semi-finals. Great job VRU! VRU Women win Second place in Bowl Division The Virginia Rugby Union (VRU) Women's Select Seven's Team came in second in the Bowl Division in the Ruggerama Rugby Tournament in Manassis, VA July 12th. Games scores were: VRU 5 vs. NOVA 2 15 VRU 17 vs. Chesapeake 0 VRU 5 vs. Furies Lightning 17 (tourney champs) VRU 17 vs. Chipolte Hot 12 VRU 0 vs. Maryland 2 22. The team lost several players for this tournament, and it was primarily a developmental side. "We are very proud of the women who stepped up to compete. From what I am told they gave one of the best games to the tournament champions, Furies Lightning." - Stephiejo Edwards All the players would like to say thank you to Shannon Plum, Cape Fear manager, Helen Paul, Ruggeramma manager, and to Pete Sweet for all of his ideas and input! This summer leaves us very excited about the future of the VRU Women's Select-Side Program! For more info please contact Stephiejo Edwards, women@rugby.org
